On the FIFTH Day of wellness my blogger gave to me... "a tip about drinking"

                           Today's Tip (Day 5):
"Drink six, 8 ounce glasses of pure water today!"

Pure water simply means no added juice, artificial flavors or sweeteners. Water not only hydrates you, it also helps the body flush out waste products. AND water helps to carry nutrients and oxygen to the cells.

Did you know that water comprises about 60% of your body weight?  Everyday we loose water through perspiration, breathe, urination and bowel movements. Therefore, it's important to replace water lost. You expel between two and four cups of water a day by normal breathing. And if you perspire, even without exercising, your body could lose about two cups of water as well.

Most healthcare professionals recommend drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day. However, those who exercise often and are very active may require more water. To determine how much water to consume, calculate 1/2 ounce per pound of body weight for the average person.

Benefits of Drinking Water:

Moistens body tissue such as in the mouth, eyes and nose
Protects organs and tissues
Helps prevent constipation
Helps dissolve minerals and other nutrients making them accessible to the body
Can help regulate body temperature and blood pressure
Lubricates joints
Can decrease headaches and fatigue caused by dehydration

-Think about it, skin cells smoother, muscles more toned...less wrinkles!

Not thirsty? You may still be dehydrated!

Dehydration occurs when the body loses more fluid (water) than is consumed. Because you aren't thirsty, you may not know you are dehydrated. Perhaps you feel sluggish. Have a headache. Feel like your heart is racing. Experience dry skin. Maybe you are constipated or your urine is dark yellow and has a strong order. These are all signs you may have a mild case of dehydration.

How do you know if you are rehydrated?

If you follow today's wellness tip, chances are you will be well hydrated. An easy way to gauge if you are hydrated is to monitor the frequency and color of your urine. If you are urinating every 3-5 hours and your urine is a pale yellow or clear, you're hydrated!  Keep in mind, taking supplements may make your urine have a bright yellow appearance, this is normal. You should be concerned if your urine is a dark yellow color or if 5-6 hours pass between bathroom breaks.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

Just as too little water causes dehydration, which can result in health problems, so does drinking water in excess. When you consume more water than your body needs or can accomodate, it is known as water intoxicationExcess water in the body causes sodium levels to drop. This alters water balance in the brain which can result in seizures or even death. BUT this has to be an EXTREME amount of water consumed. Unless you have a known medical problem, research has shown that the average person can safely drink 10 liters of water per dayHOWEVER, please be advised, that individuals with certain medical conditions such as kidney or cardiac disease may have fluid restrictions. This information is for general educational purposes only and you should always check with your personal physician if your urine output has significantly changed or you have questions about the proper amount of water to consume.

Wellness Tip:  Drink at least six to eight pure glasses of water a day.

For a freshing twist to your water, make a pitcher of water with slices of lemon and cucumber or add sliced oranges to your water. Chill in the refridge for a few hours and enjoy!
