Thanks for the information. Diabetes is such a growing concern. Although it seems that the concern is how we live our lives and what we put in our bodies and how we treat our bodies. I think naturopathic doctors and holistic nurses can help enhance the treatment plans of medical doctors. Why can't everyone work together? But more importantly why can't we demand that our medical doctors work with others? Why do we let them dictate how to take care of our health? Why don't we take better care of our health? We abuse ourselves and then want our doctors to fix us.

Thank you for this interview. There is alot of people out there with diabetes. We hear alot of eating habits and exercise, but like the doctor said, these are difficult changes. With the first reaction is what medicine can I go on to help, it's nice to be reminded that medicine alone may not help, that we have to help ourselves and this is what I took from your interview. That looking at your condition from a "holistic" perspective doesn't mean to give up my medical doctor but to also see what other resources I can use to help my body possible recover. That damange MAY not be irreversible. I like that the doctor did not sound like she wanted us to give up our medical doctors but wants to work with them. I guess the medical doctors should look at ND's as another speciality like the look at pulmonologist, endocrinologist, etc. The ND's are there to support our nutritional and lifestyle changes that are important to healing and making the drugs do what they are suppose to...that is help us for a short period of time, not be in our system for life. Too many times we live on medications to help us with a problem, but we don't help the problem ourselves. The medicine is just a bandaid. The root of situation 80% of the time lies within us! Thanks for sharing this perspective. I really liked what this doctor said. I just may have to check her out

Great interview. Extremely educating and easy to follow. This is the fastest growing and aggressive illness with the baby boomer and gen X generations due to over indulgence, lack of exercise and a sedentary lifestill created by excessive computer use for work and pleasure. As you mentioned Nov is Diabetes Awareness Month and there are many events planned that will help us all better understand Diabetes and also provide some fun, exercise and fundraising opportunities to aid in the research and development of new technologies to help fight and control this illness. I look forward to more interviews and educational materials that will enlighten and help educate all of us. Again fantastic job, keep up the great work...

This was a very interesting article! I have always considered going to see a naturopathic doctor but was always hesitant to try something unconventional. But after reading what you said I now see that it isn't unconventional it's just bringing us back to taking care of ourselves without thinking a pill is going to cure us. I mean I won't give up my medical doctor, but I can totally see adding this specialist to my list of physicians or as you said my "health care team". And if insurance reimburses, it's even more of an incentive to try. Thanks for the information, I will consider it and investigate further. You do provide great information to get us thinking and not in a pushy way. In your articles you truly do provide both persepctives from both the medical and the complementary/alternative side. Thank you for your resources!

Thanks Jeannine for this information. Despite all the media attention to breast cancer awareness-women are still not getting their mammograms!! Don't let fear and excuses prevent you from taking care of yourself. If you don't take care of your health no one else will (or can). As Tricia said -get your mammogram today!

I can attest to the wonders of reflexology.Recently I had a session with Jeannine and on that day I was really dragging. I thought I might of had a sinus infection as I had had a headache for a few days, congestion,no energy, couldn't sleep and ached right down to my toes (not to mention completely stressed)! I had thought briefly of canceling my appt with Jeannine and going to the Dr's for some antibiotics, especially since I had to travel to NJ the next day to give a presentation. I thought if I got a few doses of antibiotics before my trip I would feel better and be able to get through the presentation. But....I really felt I needed a session with Jeannine more. When I got to my session-Jeannine asked me how I was doing I told her how I was feeling and we agreed rather quickly that reflexology was the way to go. I immediately started to relax even with all those painful pressure points! and I think a few times I actually fell asleep! When my session was over I was pleasantly surprised that my headache had diminished and I wasn't feeling as achy but I still thought I would go home take some Advil, get some sleep (since I was feeling very relaxed)and hope for the best. To my suprise when I got home I actually felt energized and managed to get in a meeting with my boss, finish some notes to my presentation and do a little cleaning. When I woke up the next morning I could not believe how well I slept, I had a slight headache,my achiness was all but gone and I was looking forward to my trip. i still was not sure if I should go to the Dr's for the antibiotics cuz I wasn't sure how long "the effects" of reflexology lasted so I planned on calling her when I got home to see if I could get an appt. Well, I didn't need to do that-the trip went well, my energy level was still high and I really felt good. I do still have some congestion but I've been using my Netti pot and I'm good to go. I am very happy that I did not cancel my appt with Jeannine and go to the Dr's to get antibiotics. Holistic health the way to go!!

Judy thank you for your excitement and testiment to reflexology and holistic therapies! It is important for me to state though that in no way to I promote the use of holistic therapies to replace any conventional medical therapies. There is a need for both medical services in our lives. My goal is to bridge the gap and help both professionals and clients to embrace the positive outcomes using these therapies together. There is definitly a time in which perscription medications and certain medical therapies are necessary and should not be avoided. However there are also those moments that we should not "run to the medicine cabinet" ; instead work towards enhancing and "jumpstarting" our body's natural healing abilities. This is what you experienced! You gave your body an opportunity to rest. When the body is in a state of relaxation our energy system can rebalance and recharge. Your body was "not feeling well" because it was talking to you through the symptoms you were feeling. You listened, you took action and started to feel better. WAY TO GO!!! You took charge, You help facilitate a healing process, You did it, I was merely a tool, a resource.  So I feel the lesson here, is when your body is telling you something through "symptoms of not feeling good", take a moment and listen, see what is going on, what are we doing that we can change to help us feel better. If all attempts still don't work, of course see your physician. Holistic Health is about understanding our bodies, know what is in our control and what isn't and how to use ALL medical resources available to maintain the best wellness state possible. Thank you for your comments!!! I love reading them!

You know if I didn't get my mammogram I would not be here today! I was 35 and I was just getting a baseline. No family history! And there is was so small. The size smaller than a baby pea. I was able to remove the mass and avoid all types of treatment. Just "watchful waiting" they said. It's been three years and still clear. Yes prevention of all kinds is the key. Get your mammogram today ladies!

This was a great post! I never looked at prevention of breast cancer in this way. I always thought just like you said that we want to prevent getting cancer. But I guess there is alot of prevention that can be done after you are diagnosed. Preventing having the cancer take control over your life is what I say. Thank you.

    Jeannine,
Once again, you always bring me back to the question, have I taken time for myself?? Well, I actually did! I am trying to add that little special part to my crazy everyday life. I always see you sitting on one shoulder(hands on hips) and I need not to mention the other people on my other shoulder(lol). So yes, you do make a big difference in my life. You do stay with me as a good reminder....TAKE TIME FOR MYSELF!!! Love ya! I am very proud of you!!

I too was inspired by this book. Like you, it sat on my nightstand until one night, feeling uninspired and stagnant in my life, I picked up the book, out of pure boredom! The journey this book took me on was so amazing that I felt as if I could be her! Why can’t I explore the world? She was at her lowest point in life, asking someone for change, until she realized, she was the only one that could put the wheels in motion! She had to be the one to set her destiny, where she wanted to go and who she wants to be. Why does she have to do what society says is correct? These are questions that I too am asking myself through my journey. Life is what we make of it, where does our passion take us? Are we listening? As Elizabeth eloquently put it, happiness is the consequence of personal effort. You have to participate in your life in order to make it what YOU want! This is definatly an inspiring book and I hope everyone picks it up and becomes inspired! Be a participant in your life, not a spectator!!
